Florida consolidates itself as one of the fastest growing states in the United States, reaching an estimated population of 23,372,215 people in 2023, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This number represents an increase of 467,347 inhabitants over the previous year, putting Florida behind only Texas, which gained 562,941 new residents. The state’s growth rate of 2% was surpassed only by the District of Columbia (2.2%), while Texas and Utah showed a growth of 1.8%.
International Migration: The Growth Engine
The data indicates that international migration was the main factor in population growth in the United States, accounting for 84% of the total increase of 3.3 million people between 2023 and 2024. In Florida, the positive balance of international migration was 411,322 people, placing the state among the largest beneficiaries, along with California and Texas. The strategic position and attractive lifestyle continue to make Florida a prominent destination for immigrants and international investors.
The South As a Featured Region
Of all the U.S. regions, the South had the highest population growth, adding almost 1.8 million people between July 2023 and July 2024. This increase came mainly from international migration, which brought 1.1 million new residents, and domestic migration, responsible for 411,004 people. The South was the only region to present a positive balance of internal migration, consolidating itself as an attractive destination for people from other parts of the country.
Demographic Challenges in Florida
Despite the significant growth, Florida faces unique demographic challenges. The state was one of the 17 to record more deaths than births, with a “natural decrease” of 7,321 people. According to economists, this trend should continue in the coming years, as the population ages and the number of births remains stable or falling.
Future Projections
State reports indicate that Florida’s population is expected to grow to 25.7 million by 2034, even with the negative natural balance. This growth will be driven mainly by migration, both international and domestic. Each year, the state adds the equivalent of a medium-sized city, comparable to Orlando or St. Petersburg, consolidating its position as one of the most populous and dynamic states in the USA.

With the new data, Florida maintains the third place in national population, behind only California and Texas. Other states such as New York, Pennsylvania and Illinois are still below Florida in the population ranking. Interestingly, only Vermont, Mississippi and West Virginia recorded slight population deshts in the last year, reinforcing Florida’s position as one of the main destinations for new residents.
