Florida, known worldwide as the “Sunshine State” for its tropical climate and sunny days, is facing a rare phenomenon: snow and freezing temperatures. Last week, cities in the north of the state, such as Tallahassee, Destin and Pensacola, recorded snowfall, something practically unprecedented in the region. Tallahassee, the capital, saw its last snow in 2018, but the largest historical record was in 1958, with 2.7 inches accumulated. Now, part of the Panhandle, in the far north, is also covered by a white layer, bringing an unusual scenario for residents and visitors.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in preparation for the storm that hit the northern part of the state. With roads covered with snow and ice, the authorities warned the population to redouble their care. For many, the view of the snow-covered landscapes is charming, but the challenges brought by the unusual climate are significant.
Orlando and the Unusual Cold
Although Orlando, in the center of the state, recorded no snow, the city faces intense cold and rains that have made this week atypical by local standards. On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, the highs were between 55°F and 59°F, with night lows falling to 41°F. The hail was recorded in northern regions, such as Marion County, while Orlando experienced a cloudy and rainy day.
Experts recommend that residents and tourists wear layered clothes and carry umbrellas. Despite the drop in temperatures, the weather is expected to return to normal on the weekend, when the thermometers should reach 69°F, providing the typical heat of the region.

Snow in Miami (1977)
Even the city of Miami, famous for its constant heat, has already recorded snow. The phenomenon occurred in January 1977, during a memorable climatic event that brought down temperatures to record levels throughout the state. Two cold fronts coming from the Arctic crossed Florida, causing the only occurrence of snow in the history of Miami. The entire state was on alert, and Melbourne, in Brevard County, recorded an impressive 17°F , the lowest temperature ever recorded in the region. Although extremely rare, snow in Florida went down in history as an event that surprised residents and marked an era. See full snow history in Florida at this link

Snow: A Unique Experience
For those who are in Florida right now, whether resident or tourist, the unusual cold and the possibility of seeing snow in the north of the state are unique experiences. While the cold lasts, Orlando and other regions remain safe and operating normally, but with a winter charm that will hardly be forgotten.
