Coconut Grove, the bucolic and elegant neighborhood south of Miami, has undergone transformations in recent years and has won the title of 29th most “cool” (cool) in the world. The ranking was released by Time Out magazine, which includes the 51 coolest neighborhoods in the world in 2022.
The Time Out Index ranking is released every year and developed through interviews with thousands of residents in different cities around the world.
Coconut Grove, until the 90’s, as the name suggests, was just a bucolic neighborhood, with exuberant and tropical nature, chosen by many Americans to keep vacation homes. Typically a quiet neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle of South Beach, despite being geographically close on the map.
It is worth mentioning that the community, popularly known as “The Grove”, is considered the oldest neighborhood in Miami and was initially inhabited by people from the Bahamas.
It turns out that the region began to receive hundreds of millions in investments and, especially in the last two years, experienced a large influx of new residents from other corners of the USA, in search of a pleasant climate and quality of life.
The neighborhood is small and offers less than 200 residential homes. The increase in tourism in the region has led to the community gaining several new restaurants, two of which have Michelin stars. CocoWalk, its central open-air mall, has also been completely renovated, with a new cinema and shops.
Coconut Grove, despite being in full growth, is still very small and retains its bucolic essence and its cozy charm with community characteristics. Strolling through the streets and establishments, it is possible to appreciate local art, fairs, local associations and museums.
The TOP 5 of the Time Out Ranking
Just out of curiosity, the Top 5 neighborhoods in the Time Out ranking were
- 1 – Colonia Americana (Guadalajara – Mexico)
- 2 – The cool neighborhood of Cais do Sodré (Lisbon – Portugal)
- 3 – Wat Bo Village (Siem Reap – Cambodia)
- 4 – Ridgewood (Queens – New York)
- 5 – Mile End (Montreal – Canada)
- Miami’s Rapid Transformation
Miami is nicknamed “The Magic City” for a reason: its rapid year-on-year transformation.
Neighborhoods in Miami are experiencing real revolutions. This is the case of Brickell, for example, which went from a financial district predominantly with office buildings, to a hybrid neighborhood, with residential condominiums, and today is one of the most desired and expensive in Miami. Brickell has also received the title of the “coolest” neighborhood in Miami”.
Aventura, further north, already well known to tourists, is also undergoing transformations. The neighborhood is going through the reverse process of Brickell. Predominantly residential, Aventura is receiving offices and institutions, gaining a very welcome urban “vibe” and with the advantage of being home to one of the largest shopping centers in the USA, Shopping Aventura Mall.
Recently, Aventura received a Brightline train station, which connects it to Downtown Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Boca Raton. The train company intends to finalize the Miami – Orlando train route later this year.
